The agent handles the communications with the network elements.
In a multi-tasking operating system like Linux, several agent processes can be running depending on the number of sub-networks connected to the workstation.
The agent can
• upload and download configurations from and to the NEs,
• poll NEs for alarms,
• retrieve and set status information.
